The Crystal Lake and Pleasant Street district holds Carpenter Gothic, bracketed Italianate, Second Empire and Queen Anne houses put up between 1860 and 1895. Gray Cliff Road has what is widely considered one of Newton’s finest Shingle Style houses among a run of exceptionally high-quality homes from 1890 to 1940. The Sumner and Gibbs Streets district is sixteen houses built between 1865 and 1899, six of them Queen Anne.
What makes Newton Centre unusual is that it also has a genuine condominium and apartment layer close to the square — the only village with both at real scale. That means we work on two quite different jobs here: century-old single-family houses full of plaster, radiators, elaborate millwork and stained glass, and smaller modern units where the work is tighter and faster. Unlike Chestnut Hill and Auburndale, Newton Centre has no local historic district, so exterior work is unregulated.
